For those who hunt from a base camp, is morning coffee just about waking up or is it something more? I feel like there's a ritual aspect that matters as much as the caffeine.

Camp coffee is how I calm my nerves, it's my signal that the day is starting with purpose, not just caffeine.

It sounds like its a ritual for most folks

Ritual, I think, as much as anything else. It used to be coffee - hot, strong, and black. But then, there was that conversation about how caffeine hardens the arteries of the heart, and so, as camp cook, I wound up digging sassafras roots and we migrated to that for the morning hot drink. Now, I no longer cook - heck, I no longer go on the hunt - so the cabin is now full of younger guys and younger habits.
