Flash hiders and compensators confusion

I don't fully understand what each one does differently, they all look similar to me. When would you pick one over the other? Can someone explain this in simple terms?

Flash hider saves your night vision, compensator saves your muzzle from jumping everywhere.

I just pick what I need based on the problem I'm trying to fix.

I like linear comps. Helps direct sound away from me. And if someone is next to me at the gun range. They don't get blasted with the shock wave like a muzzle brake or flash hider does.
