What are the bug-out bag essentials?

I've been reviewing my bug-out bag and wondering what's truly essential. Some folks stick to basics like water, food, and first aid, while others pack tools, ammo, or shelter. What items never leave your kit?

Water filtration and a good knife never leave mine, everything else is just bonus. Fire starter's up there too, but honestly most people overpack like crazy. I'd rather move fast with essentials than be weighed down with gear I might not need

Along with a good 6" knife and fire starters, I have a military-grade poncho right near the top of the bag.

For me, water filter, first aid kit, multitool, and fire starter are non-negotiable. I keep a light tarp and spare ammo too

Yeah extra weight slows you down fast, it is better to stick with essentials you'll actually use

yeah poncho's underrated, it doubles as shelter and rain gear. I run the same with my essentials, it keeps weight down but usefulness high
