Sadly, I'm at that stage where I'm getting rid of stuff, but before I sold the lathe and mill, I really wanted to build one, strictly from scratch (well, sort of).

A three foot piece of 3/4" rebar wound up in my shop a few decades ago, and I really wanted to put just a bit of noticable kink in it, then bore out rebar and use that for a barrel, get a 22LR liner, then put a Lyman globe sight for the front and a nice old-fashioned Lyman or Redfield adjustable rear peep sight and make a nice break-open action gun, but put it on an old, stained 2x4 and take it to the range when all the other guys were shooting their two thousand dollar rifles. Just to see what I could stir up, you know.

That would've been legendary. A rebar barrel stuck onto a stained 2x4, just outshooting folks with all their fancy carbon fiber and Cerakote. What a missed chance for some real range drama.

I started with muzzleloading with a won Armsport kit, a .54 caliber Hawken. built 3 more kits and then started scratch building with guidance from a master who's passed on. My first all scratch without his help awarded me his great praise for my gutsy perseverance and confidence to take it on. You have to find a starting pace and ...begin! I learned to make a mistake a good thing!

That was my first solo firearm. I built it in 1994 (32years old as of this posting). I've done two more projects one needs the final stain & coat. The other was a CVA kit .45 pistol, redo that the owner never completed or never shot. I striped to parts and redid it, Oh, yeah it shoots very, very well. I also made some shooting accessories for it: a ball bag, A bone handled nipple pic; And a pistol range ramrod. Just a NOTE for you DIY guys: Modern day bullet casings dimpled out with a grinding ball tool make great rod tips. They can also be tap & died to receive cleaning tips of your choosing.
