Been thinking about building my first AR-15 for a while now. Finally starting to look at parts, and honestly, it's a bit overwhelming. There are some good deals out there, but I can’t tell what’s worth it and what’s just shiny marketing.

I'm aiming for a basic rifle build, probably going with 5.56. I’ve read mixed things about other calibers for first-time builds, so I’m not sure if I should stay the course or branch out. Anyone have thoughts on that?

Also, what parts or brands should I steer clear of? I’ve seen some horror stories, and I’d rather skip the headache. I keep hearing about hidden costs too, which freaks me out a little. What are those rookie mistakes I should watch for?

Part of me thinks maybe it’s just easier to buy a ready-made rifle. Like, how do you decide if building is really worth it?

I appreciate any input! Even if it’s just a funny story about what went wrong on your first build.

If I were to have another AR (I sold my last one a while ago), I'd look at Palmetto State Armory.

https://palmettostatearmory.com/ar-15/kits.html

Disclaimer: I have no financial or business interest with them. They just seem to be there with a lot of good stuff.

They have lower kits from @$75, and uppers start at @ $225. That seems to me to be a good enough "entry" to the AR-15 world, and not at all expensive to start your AR habit. They sometimes even offer "blemish" items at even lower prices.

I have been thinking about your question in the month since you posted it. I might now give a more in-depth answer : If you can't BUY exactly what you want, then it might be to your advantage to build it. But maybe the ready-made market could satisfy your desire (with a bit of compromise). What, exactly, is the configuration of your desired build?

PSA kits are a great deal for the price. The trigger and barrel will really make your build. I am a big fan of the old Bushmaster 1x9 barrels. Geisselle triggers are worth what they get for them. I live out in the sticks, 20 inch barrels make sense out here.

Actually it depends on what you're going to use it for. Just plinking then IMO any decently made one will do but a trigger change is recommended. If you're going to get into competition shooting then pay once cry once but get the best you can afford.
